5 Skincare Habits for Radiant Summer Skin

Summer heat changes how your skin behaves — oil production increases, sweat mixes with sunscreen and product residue, and your usual winter routine can suddenly feel too heavy. A few adjustments go a long way.

First, switch to a gentler, gel-based cleanser. Foaming cleansers can be too stripping when your skin is already working overtime in the heat, and a gentler formula helps keep your barrier intact.

Second, lighten up your moisturizer. You still need to hydrate, even in summer, but a lightweight lotion or gel absorbs faster and won't feel suffocating under sunscreen.

Third, exfoliate weekly, not daily. Sweat, sunscreen, and sand can build up and dull your skin, but over-exfoliating in summer heat can compromise your barrier right when it needs the most protection. Once or twice a week is usually the sweet spot.

Fourth, add an antioxidant serum, like one with vitamin C, to your morning routine. Antioxidants help defend your skin against the environmental stress that comes with extra sun exposure, and they pair well with your daily SPF rather than replacing it.

Finally, don't treat sunscreen as a one-and-done step. Reapplying every two hours (more often if you're swimming or sweating) is the single habit that protects everything else you're doing for your skin. Keep a travel-size bottle in your bag so there's no excuse to skip it.
