Golden Hour Glow: Achieving a Natural-Looking Tan at Home

A natural-looking tan at home comes down to preparation and technique far more than the product itself. Here's the process that actually holds up.

Start the night before with a full-body exfoliation. Focus on rough areas like knees, elbows, and ankles, since these spots absorb color unevenly if they're left dry or flaky. A smooth base is the single biggest factor in avoiding patchiness.

On application day, moisturize lightly, and only on your driest areas. Too much moisturizer can create a barrier that causes the product to slide rather than absorb evenly, so keep it minimal and focused.

Apply your tanning product in sections, using long, circular motions rather than back-and-forth strokes. Working in sections — legs, arms, torso, and so on — helps you keep track of coverage and avoid missed spots or heavy buildup in one area.

A tanning mitt is worth using even if you think you don't need one. It gives you a more even application and keeps your palms from developing the tell-tale orange tint that gives away a rushed job.

Go lighter around your knees, elbows, and ankles specifically. These areas naturally absorb more product, so a slightly thinner layer here helps them blend with the rest of your tan instead of looking noticeably darker.

Give the product time to develop before you get dressed or lie down on light-colored sheets. Loose, dark clothing for the first few hours prevents transfer and gives the color time to set undisturbed.

Once your tan has developed, keep it looking fresh by moisturizing daily. Well-hydrated skin fades more evenly, extending the life of your glow instead of letting it patch or streak as it wears off.
