The Ultimate Guide to Safe Summer Tanning

The Ultimate Guide to Safe Summer Tanning

A great tan starts long before you lay out your towel. The biggest mistake most people make is treating tanning as an all-or-nothing event, when in reality your skin builds a healthy glow gradually — and protects itself better when you let it.

Start by timing your sun exposure. UV rays are strongest between 11am and 3pm, so if you're prone to burning, aim for morning or late-afternoon sessions instead. You'll still develop color, just with far less risk of overdoing it.

Layering matters too. If you're using a tanning oil without built-in SPF, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen underneath first, then follow with your oil to help lock in moisture and enhance the glow. Reapply both every couple of hours, especially after swimming or towelling off.

Hydration is your secret weapon. Skin that's well-hydrated from the inside out tans more evenly and holds color longer. Drink water throughout the day, and don't skip your daily moisturizer once you're out of the sun.

Finally, always patch test a new tanning oil on a small area of skin before your first full application. Everyone's skin reacts a little differently, and a quick test the day before saves you from discovering a sensitivity in the middle of a beach day.

Tan responsibly, reapply often, and let your glow build over the course of the season rather than a single afternoon. Your skin will thank you for it.
